When the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 launched, Apple said hypertension notifications wouldn’t be available on them in Canada at first, because “additional regulatory clearances for the feature for these models is in process.” That’s changing. iPhone in Canada reports that Health Canada updated Apple’s existing medical device licence on September 28, and that at least one Series 12 owner in Quebec now has the feature turned on.
How it works:
- The watch analyzes data from its optical heart sensor in the background, over time.
- It looks for patterns that may suggest chronic high blood pressure, and notifies you so you can follow up with a doctor.
- It’s not a blood pressure reading, and it doesn’t replace a cuff.
Health Canada classifies the feature as a Class II medical device. Apple hasn’t announced the Canadian rollout itself, so if you have a Series 12 or Ultra 4, check the Health app on your iPhone to see whether it’s available to you.
Why it matters: High blood pressure often has no symptoms. A passive alert from a device people already wear could prompt checkups that wouldn’t happen otherwise. Canada is still catching up after launch-day regulatory delays, but this one looks close.
